RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION FAQs
Renovations & Remodeling
Can you renovate older or historic homes?
Yes. JR Maxwell Builders has extensive experience renovating older and historic homes throughout Bucks County, including the area’s distinctive stone farmhouses and other period properties. We understand the care and craftsmanship these homes require and work to preserve their original character while thoughtfully incorporating modern updates, amenities, and functionality.
What should I expect during construction?
Before construction begins, JR Maxwell Builders will establish a clear scope of work and project schedule with defined milestones. Throughout the project, we take care to protect areas of your home that are not part of the renovation and maintain regular communication so you know what to expect as work progresses. Before each phase is considered complete, we conduct a walkthrough to review the work and address any questions or details that may need attention.
How do you minimize disruption to my family?
We carefully phase our work to limit how much of your home is affected at any one time. Defined work hours, dust and debris containment, and thoughtful planning help keep the construction area as controlled as possible. We also maintain clear communication throughout the project, especially during periods when essential spaces such as a kitchen or bathroom may be temporarily unavailable.
Kitchen & Bath Renovations
How long does a typical kitchen renovation take?
A typical kitchen renovation takes approximately 6 to 12 weeks from demolition through completion, depending on the scope and complexity of the project. More extensive renovations that involve structural changes, custom cabinetry, or significant electrical and plumbing work may require additional time, while a more cosmetic update can often be completed sooner. We establish a project schedule up front so you have a clear understanding of the anticipated timeline before construction begins.
Can you create custom cabinetry and built-ins?
Yes. Through Mink Run Millwork, our in-house millwork division, JR Maxwell Builders designs and builds custom cabinetry and built-ins specifically for your home. Each piece is crafted to fit your space precisely, allowing for a more seamless look, better functionality, and a level of customization that standard cabinetry cannot provide.
Do you help select materials and finishes?
Yes. JR Maxwell Builders can help guide the selection of cabinetry, countertops, tile, fixtures, and other finishes throughout your project. Our recommendations are based not only on aesthetics, but also on durability, functionality, and how materials perform in real, lived-in spaces. The goal is to help you make selections that complement your home and continue to work well for years to come.
Can walls be removed to create an open floor plan?
In many cases, yes. JR Maxwell Builders can evaluate the existing structure to determine whether a wall is load bearing and what modifications may be required. When structural support is needed, we can coordinate the appropriate solution, such as a beam or engineered header, to help create a more open layout while maintaining the integrity of the home.
What adds the most value to a kitchen remodel?
The greatest value comes from thoughtful design that reflects both your space and the way you actually use your kitchen. Taking the time during the planning stages to consider functionality as well as aesthetics can make a significant difference in the finished result. A well-planned layout, quality cabinetry, and durable materials can create a kitchen that not only looks great, but also works better for how you cook, gather, and live every day.
Home Additions
Can I live in my home during an addition project?
In most cases, yes. Whether you can remain in your home depends on the scope and complexity of the addition, and we will discuss those expectations with you during the planning process. Whenever possible, JR Maxwell Builders works to keep construction separated from your main living areas for as long as possible before connecting the new space to the existing home. Our goal is to minimize disruption and help make the process as manageable as possible for you and your family.
How long does a home addition typically take?
Most home additions take approximately three to six months to complete, depending on the size, complexity, and scope of the project. Factors such as structural work, material selections, permitting, and custom features can also affect the overall timeline. We establish expectations and a project schedule during the planning process so you have a clear understanding of what to expect before construction begins.
Will the addition match the existing architecture of my home?
Yes. An addition can be designed to complement the existing architecture of your home by matching elements such as rooflines, siding, trim, and window styles. In many cases, the goal is to make the new space feel as though it has always been part of the house. We can also take a different design approach if you are looking to update or change the overall look of your home. The final direction depends on your goals, preferences, and the character of the existing structure.
Do you handle zoning and permit requirements?
Yes. JR Maxwell Builders manages the zoning approvals and permitting required for your project and coordinates directly with your local township throughout the process. Our familiarity with area municipalities helps us navigate these requirements and keep the project moving forward as efficiently as possible.
